Coastal Diving

Very narrow coastal shelves, submarine walls, canyons and escarpments bring coastal, pelagic and deep water marine habitats in close proximity to each other. As a consequence, on a dive, quite literally, almost anything could turn up!

Photographers will be delighted by the variety of subject matter. The volcanic seascapes and its diverse marine life (including huge stingrays and exquisite nudibranchs) offer exciting opportunities for both wide angle and macro photography.

While our pelagic sharks and mobulas are definite highlights, closer to shore there is also much for divers to see and explore.

We are an authorised PADI Dive Resort (No. 799438) and an SSI Dive Centre (No. 735181).

The CW Azores base is thoroughly equipped to ensure our guests the best safety standards.

Our boats are furnished with an Oxygen Kit and all dives are guided by Divemasters trained in first aid and rescue techniques.

Temperature From 16°C (winter) to 25°C (summer).

Visibility From 15 to 30+ metres.

There are no strong thermoclines and often no thermocline at all in the waters around Pico, apart from a couple of dive spots that we will promptly signal to our divers.

Coastal habitats and biodiversity

It is possible to target some species by diving specific habitats at certain times of the year or states of the tide. Sandy habitats are good for Common stingrays ( Dasyatis pastinaca ), Madeira Skates ( Raja maderensis ), Cleaver wrasse ( Xyrichthys novacula ), and Black-spot conger eels ( Paraconger macrops ).

Rocky reefs yield abundant moray eels (4 species) and groupers. Places that pinch the current also attract huge Round stingrays ( Taeniura grabata ), particularly in June when males and females gather together, along with barracuda, jacks and tunas.

Escarpments and pinnacles are exciting spots for pelagics such as Eagle rays ( Myliobatis aquila ), tunas, jacks, Bluefish ( Pomatomus saltator ) and, in late summer, perhaps Wahoo ( Acanthocybium solandri ), mobulas and mantas.

Excellent opportunities for photographers

Underwater photographers interested in critters or small marine life can be entertained by a diverse range of blennies, gobies, small wrasse, damsels, scorpion fish, nudibranchs, crustacea.

This adds to a variety of sessile marine invertebrates, including Black corals ( Antipathella wollastoni ) in water as shallow as 18m!

Nudibranchs are best seen in late spring and early summer.

The most often seen species include the psychedelic Tambja ceutae, Hypselodoris picta (often seen among beds of orange sponge Crambe crambe) and Jewel anemones ( Corynactis viridis ), Discodoris atromaculata and the large Sea hare Aplysia fasciata.

Groups and Dive Clubs

Groups, Dive Clubs and Dive Schools often seek to find unspoiled, relaxing destinations, along with the possibility to complete referral programs for students or focus on courses while exploring beautiful dive sites.

Pico Island is the perfect spot for this, allowing for very good diving and complementing your holiday with the opportunity to snorkel with wild dolphins and watch the whales.

Furthermore, local culture, food and atmosphere just makes Pico Island an excellent escape from work, stress and mass tourism destinations.
