Today in S. Caetano Bay on the south side of Pico I saw my first group of Risso's dolphins for the year. Risso's are actually present in the Azores all year round, but usually only appear intermittently close inshore. When they do it is very often in S. Caetano Bay. Their skin is heavily scarred with teeth marks, probably caused by boisterous social interplay with each other, but the effect is not unattractive (see below).
Some individuals were very inquisitive and this one (see below) does a spy-hop to take a better look at our boat.
